"Naomi Kawase retrospective" at the National Film Archive of Japan

Beginning on Christmas Eve, December 24, until January 19, 2020, the National Film Archive of Japan in Kyobashi, Tokyo will present the "Naomi Kawase Retrospective,"

the first large-scale special exhibition of my films here in Japan.

On December 24, the first day will begin with a selection of documentaries, Embracing, Katatsumori, and Sky, Wind, Fire, Water, Earth.

December 24 (Tues.) 15:00

These are representative documentaries from my early career.

I searched for my father and confronted the foster mother who raised me.

These films gave me my connection to the world.

The films led me to commit my life to making films.

In the evening, the second program will present my first fiction film, Suzaku.

December 24 (Tues.) 19:00

Featuring Machiko Ono, who lived at the time in the Nishiyoshino district of Nara Prefecture, the films portrays a family dealing with the loss of the father and beginning to go their separate ways.

The film won the Caméra d'Or for best first film at the Cannes Film Festival.

After the screenings on the first day, I will appear on stage, speaking about my thoughts on these early films and my career in the years since.

Given that it is Christmas Eve, I imagine many of you are busy, but I hope you will be able to attend.
